Relapse Prevention
|
The Relapse Prevention program at Columbia Addictions Center has been designed by our experienced staff and based on the following principles:
1. Research and professional publication from pioneers in the field, such as Dennis C. Daley and Terence Gorski.
2. Lessons we have learned from the many people in recovery who have TAUGHT US about real life problems with relapse and recovery.
3. Evaluation of possible mental health or psychiatric disorders. We find that if another problem such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD is not addressed and treated then it is often difficult to stay clean and sober.
4. Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disorder that can be managed by all the tools at our disposal, including medications, acupuncture, nutrient therapy and other interventions.
5.12 Step principles.
6. The love and support of a caring and knowledgeable therapist can be a critical price that needs to be in place. Each of our counselors brings uniqueness to the relationship. Counselors and clients are matched accordingly.
7. Principles of cognitive behavioral therapy. Here, we help clients through the process of relapse recovery on how one’s thoughts cause feelings and behaviors. New research supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), indicates that people who are trying to end their addiction to marijuana and other drugs can benefit from a treatment program the combines motivational incentives with cognitive – behavioral therapy.
8. A thorough inventory of how and or why the relapse occurred. Relapse is usually causes by a combination of factors and may include more of the following.
- Stopping medications on one's own or against the advice of medical professionals.
- Keeping alcohol, drugs, and paraphernalia around the house for any reason.
- Obsessive thinking about using drugs or drinking.
- Failing to follow ones treatment plan-quitting therapy-skipping doctor’s appointments.
- Feeling overconfident- that you no longer need support.
- Relationship difficulties.
- Setting unrealistic goals
- Perfectionism
- Feeling overwhelmed confused- useless- stressed out
- Poor eating habits (nutrition plays a big key)
- Lack of structure in life.
- Dwelling on resentments and past hurts.
- Avoidance- refusing to deal with personal issues
- Engaging in obsessive behaviors.
- Ignoring relapse warning signs and triggers.
